Wow! If you like zombie books and I mean, true zombie books with strong characters and storyline, then you really need to read this one. This is NOT one of those cheesy zombie books filled with blood and gore but an honest to goodness look at a zombie outbreak from a normal person's point of view. It kind of reminds me of J. L. Bourne's Day by Day Armageddon only this book is set in the country of Spain and from a European perspective.

I have never read Mr. Loureiro's works before but I can't wait until the other books are translated so I can buy a copy. Mr. Loureiro writes with such passion and conviction that you actually feel what the lawyer (the main character and journal writer is nameless)is going through. How an ordinary citizen reacts to the death and destruction unfolding in front of him and his raw emotions showing through out the book is remarkable and writing at it's best. The things you have to do and endure to survive in a world gone mad is so vividly portrayed by the author and his characters.

This is a very intense, action packed book but it will leave you wanting more as you come to the last word on the last page. Can't wait for the other books to be published here in the USA!!

While the overall story line of a zombie apocalypse is not unique, some of the machinations of the survival are. For instance, who knew how useful a wetsuit could be? Additionally, the protagonist makes a terrific argument for alternative energy. However, the element of the story I liked most, aside from the humanity demonstrated by the protagonist, is the perspective of seeing how the plague would affect Europe. Rarely do we Americans truly consider how Europe, with its various languages and governments, would endure such a pandemic. Our films and television programs typically present a myopic view of how events would unfold within our borders, dealing with issues that are comparatively far simpler due to our unified language and government. Noting how contrarian some of the political situations are abroad and the impact of so many self-serving solutions could be employed makes for a thought-provoking read.
I read a lot and enjoy variety. I like everything from suspense (Koontz, King), to historical fiction (Follett), fantasy (Salvatore, Rothfuss, Rowling, etc.), literature (Steinbeck), and more. I just enjoy a well-told story, period, regardless of genre. Needless to say, I trudged through this book, barely interested or caring what happened. I simply had no connection with the main character, and the story was really lame. I hated the premise of the book being a blog/journal compilation. Further, the main character's journal updates often happened at stupid, inopportune times, like while he is trapped in life threatening situations surrounded by zombies. I can't imagine anyone being in that situation and thinking, "hey, now's a good time for a journal entry!" The entries themselves were very repetitive and limited in their vocabulary and description of events. I can only hear "It was so terrible" or "I was so scared" and "I wanted to vomit" so many times before I wanted to vomit from cliche overdose. I realize it's a zombie rag and no great piece of literature, but the writing was borderline atrocious. Spoilers follow I was disappointed in the story-line regarding the mysterious briefcase and its contents. After much build up and speculation, it ended very poorly and with no resolution, other than an explosion that injured one of the main characters. It would have been nice to discover what was in the briefcase that so many people died trying to get. I was also a little disturbed at the main character's attraction to the young girl at the end of the book. I realize this may be a cultural difference, since the age of consent in Spain is 13 (I looked it up because I thought it was weird). Nonetheless, the main character is a lawyer, and assumed to be much older than the 17 year old he falls in love with. He kind of creeped me out as he simultaneously observed how the girl was "just a baby," went on to describe her pubescent breasts, and followed that up with a comment on how "sexy" she was. I'm far from a prude, but I found this distasteful. Overall, this was a poorly written, crappy book with a boring, anticlimactic story. Don't waste your time, unless you are a rabid consumer of vapid fiction and don't care about character development, plot, and originality.
